PART NUMBER CLARIFICATION was created by lancaster
Hi
I need to replace the timing cover on my 1972 280SE/9 3.5 V8, (VIN 108 057 220 117 92, ENGINE 116 980 220 132 63)
The part no from the EPC is 116 010 10 17.
The part no off the car is 116 015 15 01
I have located a timing cover from a 1971 W108 part number 116 015 08 01 which appears to fit but it has a slight difference in the casting which I think is a blank for additional fittings.
Do you know if these two timing covers are interchangeable ?
I attach photos of each part as a comparison
regards
Hans Leatherby

Hi Hans,

the number on the old control cover is a casting no starting with R for the unmachined part . That is NOT the part no. A 116 010 10 17 is the correct part no.

Hi Volker
That explains the reason why I could not match the part numbers
The next question is :-
Can I substitute the 1971 part for the 1972 part ?

You will notice a slight difference in the casting next to the crank seal - is this significant ?
regards
Hans

Hi Hans,

as there is only 1 part no. in EPC it should be okay.

Hi Volker
Thanks for the advice
The water flow guides in the cover have become corroded (see photo) and no longer direct the water flow through the radiator so the engine is getting hot
I had already replaced the thermostat to eliminate that possibility

So I think a replacement cover will cure the problem
I will proceed with care
regards
Hans
